Submersible Pumps
High-performance pumps for water abstraction in boreholes and wells.
Submersible Pumps · Specification range
A submersible electric pump is built to run fully immersed inside a borehole or well, lifting water to the surface through a vertical riser. JOVAL has manufactured this range in Portugal since 1992, drawing on significantly earlier industry experience.

Submersible Pumps
Submersible Pumps · Technical Overview
The range covers diameters of 3", 4", 6", 7", 8" and 10", with power ratings from 0.25 kW to 150 kW and manometric heads reaching nearly 480 metres. The main series — BS3, Spring, 4"F, 4"BS, BJ6, Cast-iron pumps 6-10", Ecologic and X6S — allow sizing from domestic intakes to agricultural and industrial deep wells with high flow rates. The range also includes series built to JOVAL specification by industrial partners — the 6" X6S and the rewindable submersible motors in 3" to 10" diameters — with Franklin Electric motors integrated in specific applications.
Every model is tested on our in-house hydraulic test rig at the Fafe factory, under an ISO 9001:2015 quality system. Components in stainless steel or protected cast iron, depending on the series, ensure durability when handling water with suspended solids. Technical support is provided directly by the factory, without intermediaries, with permanent stock held in Portugal.
Frequently asked questions
-
How deep can a JOVAL submersible pump be installed?
Installation depth is limited mainly by the model's manometric head. The maximum across the range is 477 metres, reached by the FT 44 78 F of the 4"F series (7.5 kW, 380 V), covering virtually every artesian borehole in Portugal.
-
How do I choose the right diameter (4", 6", 8" or 10")?
The pump diameter must be smaller than the borehole inner diameter, with clearance for the cable and cooling flow. 4" suits domestic wells and small irrigation; 6" to 10" are used in agricultural and industrial deep wells with higher flow.
-
Are JOVAL submersible pumps compatible with solar PV systems?
Yes. JOVAL offers a dedicated solar pumping line: the EOS BS3 (3") and EOS BS4 (4") borehole pumps, paired with the CFJ hybrid controller. Sizing must account for the PV array curve and the flow required across the day.
-
How is the required manometric head calculated?
Add the dynamic water level of the borehole, the geometric lift to the delivery point, and the friction losses in the pipework and fittings. The resulting figure is the head the pump must overcome at the required flow.
-
What flow rate is needed for agricultural irrigation?
It depends on the area and the crop. Drip irrigation typically needs 0.5 to 5 m³/h per hectare; sprinklers or pivots, 10 to 50 m³/h or more. JOVAL supplies multistage submersible models from 300 l/h up to 330 m³/h.
