Submersible Motors
Robust and efficient motors for driving pumps in submerged environments.
Submersible Motors
Submersible Motors · Technical Overview
The JOVAL line is manufactured to JOVAL specification by an industrial partner and covers motors in 3" and 4" sizes, in oil-filled and water-filled versions — AISI 304 body, IP 68 protection, vertical or horizontal mounting, with the 4" water-filled model rated for immersion depths up to 300 m and water temperatures up to 35 °C — plus rewindable motors in 6", 8" and 10" with PE2/PA Class Y wire stators, rated for high-temperature environments. The rewindable design allows the motor to be rebuilt at a specialist workshop instead of replacing the whole unit, extending the economic life of large-diameter installations.
The Franklin Electric line, distributed in Portugal by JOVAL, is the global reference for submersible motors in mission-critical installations. It covers standardised NEMA 4", 6" and 8" canned motors (integrated motor protection, Class B/F insulation, DIN 60947-4-1 compliant) and rewindable 6"/8"/10" motors with powers up to 185 kW, water/glycerine filling, SiC/SiC mechanical seal and water-lubricated bearings. The Franklin models are compatible with the SubMonitor protection and diagnostics system and carry a long-standing record of reliability in municipal and industrial pumping stations.
Any motor from either line can be mated to the pumps in the Submersible Pumps category, protected by a panel from the JOVAL Electrical Control Panels family and, in photovoltaic installations, driven directly from the PV array by the CFJ Hybrid Controller of the Solar Pumping range. Motor stock is held permanently in Portugal, with technical support provided directly by JOVAL including hydraulic and insulation testing before dispatch.
Frequently asked questions
-
What is the difference between the JOVAL line and the Franklin Electric line?
The JOVAL line is manufactured to JOVAL specification by an industrial partner (3" to 10") and is positioned as a competitively priced alternative. The Franklin Electric line, distributed by JOVAL in Portugal, is the global reference for submersible motors, with a long track record in mission-critical installations.
-
What is the difference between a canned motor and a rewindable motor?
A canned motor has a factory-sealed stator — if it burns out, the whole motor is replaced. A rewindable motor can be opened and rewound at a specialist workshop, cutting maintenance cost on large-power installations where the motor itself is expensive.
-
What diameters and powers does the range cover?
The range covers NEMA flanges from 3" to 10", from 0.75 kW (domestic 4" models) up to 185 kW (Franklin 10" rewindables). Diameter is chosen by borehole size: 4" for Ø100 mm domestic boreholes, 6-8" for agricultural and industrial, 10" for municipal abstraction stations.
-
Can any motor be paired with any submersible pump?
Yes, provided the NEMA flange and the power rating match. The pumps in the Submersible Pumps range accept JOVAL or Franklin motors of the same size class — typically 4" pumps with 4" motors, and 6-10" cast-iron pumps with rewindable motors.
-
How do I protect a submersible motor against dry-run and overload?
With an electrical control panel that provides digital protection against dry-run, overload and phase failure, such as the JOVAL Electrical Control Panels. For solar installations, the CFJ Hybrid Controller in the Solar Pumping range integrates drive, MPPT and protection in a single module.
